retailers. Our system, which is in use by six retailers in the UK, Germany and Brazil, allows
an online shopper to generate an image of their own body and dress the model to provide a
visualisation of a garment or outfit - giving a virtual fitting room experience and addressing
some of the issues that have hindered the growth of online clothes shopping.
The current version of the software, whilst providing a valuable feature for shoppers and
reducing returns and increasing conversion for retailers has two limitations:
a) several manually intensive activities are required before a new digital version of a garment
can be made available through the virtual fitting room
b) the visualisation of the garment on the 3D body model does not accurately reflect the way a
real garment hangs
To address these issues Metail has completed a TSB-funded proof-of-concept project (Vestis)
that has been successful in proving three main bits of technology
1) A technique to automatically separate the image of a photographed garment from the
background of the image using a calibrated photography rig and retro reflective mannequin
2) A method to automatically create 3D models of a garment from the captured images
3) Algorithms to provide real-time 3D visualisation of the garment on any
body shape
While these have been delivered in a proof of concept demonstrator they need considerable
further research and development before commercial application. The Scrydan project will
productionise the technology and prepare the attendant hardware, software tools and service
platforms to the point of a prototype that will be a template for rapid global scale-out of
Metail’s service and technology.
This prototype will give a solution to the two limitations outlined above, provide a platform
for rapid growth, generate an increased number of users and retailers, and allow for further
global expansion.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
