stream in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. This exotic, luxury leather can be produced from the skins of sustainably farmed Scottish Atlantic Salmon. The project will develop a new tanning process which is both chrome and sulphide free. Overall the process creates value from food waste, the disposal of can be a considerable cost to the salmon farming and fish processing industry. The process of tanning raw fish skins and transforming them into leather has been developed by a First Class Honours Product Design graduate from Brunel University, with specialist expertise and support from a senior lecturer at Northampton University’s internationally renowned Institute of Creative Leather Technology (ICLT). A handbag has already been produced from the material by the luxury fashion design company Mulberry, demonstrating the future potential of this extraordinary material. Further work is now needed to develop a commercial salmon-leather production process and to refine the material’s properties for the high-end luxury design market.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
