This condition affects about 100,000 people in the UK, with FND leading to neurological symptoms that stem from dysfunctional signal transmission in the brain, influenced by psychological factors like stress and past trauma. Current treatments, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), have limited success, and the NHS spends significant resources on managing these medically unexplained symptoms.

The innovation of THRIVE-FND lies in its unique combination of virtual reality (VR) and hypnotherapy, aimed at addressing the anxiety and depression often associated with FND. Utilising state-of-the-art XR technology, the program creates a highly immersive environment, integrating audio-visual, haptic, and olfactory stimuli. This multi-sensory approach is designed to rapidly relax and hypnotise patients, facilitating a more effective and consistent treatment.

We plan to initially deploy the device under supervision, with the long-term goal of enabling independent use at home. This approach aligns with government priorities for reducing hospital admissions and waiting times through cost-effective digital health solutions.

This project is a collaboration between Nudge Reality, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. It combines clinical expertise in NFD, neurology and hypnotherapy with expertise in XR design and medical device development.

This project has the potential to transform FND treatment, offering a more effective, safe, and cost-efficient solution. It could potentially save the NHS £20m over 5 years in direct treatment costs, and many multiples through the increased socio-economic contribution of FND sufferers.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
