solutions for business problems. The focal point of our work is user experiential design and
the visualisation of complex data sets. Focus also provides specialist advisory services to UK
Trade and Investment in order to help foreign companies understand the strengths of the UK’s
digital and creative sector.
As a consequence of our work within Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Focus has created a
digital product ‘Curator’ to help FDI professionals articulate regional industry clusters.
Curator creates complex info-graphics from multiple data sources; Companies House,
Linkedin, HESA etc, and presents them alongside more narrative supporting elements; key
companies, thought leaders, research projects and hubs of activity.
We have developed Curator for several cities (Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool & Bristol)
and in each case we work with regional industry specialists in order to identify the supporting
elements we require. This is an intensively consultative process and we have explored how to
use existing data to automate the measurement of regional industrial strengths. Circumventing
the need for rare and expensive specialists.
We have found that when using existing data sets, in their rudimentary form, there is a lack of
qualification and valuation of eco-system assets - Universities, Research Groups, Thought
Leaders, Companies and Professionals.
Our concept, the ‘Data Qualification Engine’ (DQE), will grade data sources against an
industrial scoring matrix in order to both qualify eco-system assets into niche industrial
subsets and determine the value of their activity.
We are seeking InnovateUK support to assist in exploring DQE’s market impact across FDI
and the broader Data Visualisation (DV) market.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
