EneRail proposed the modelling of the GCRE power requirements to understand the potential of and Energy Management/Control System. OXTO energy proposed a fly-wheel Energy Storage (ES) technology to capture regen-braking energy from vehicles.

The project proposes to combine these two approaches to demonstrate the possibility of a Energy Management/Control system for GCRE that enables the site to balance renewable power sources, regen-braking captured through the fly-wheel ES solution, and a grid connection to provide traction power for vehicles in operation at GCRE.

This proposal plans to deliver a demonstrator, at an appropriate rail relevant scale, for an energy management/control system that brings together renewable sources, ES and grid connection for the first time for traction. The commercial potential of such a solution is significant and has significant benefits for the indutry and wider stakeholder groups.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
