cancer deaths in women worldwide. Cancer UK reported that 43,463 people in the UK were
diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011 and there were 35,371 deaths in 2012. The leading cause
of lung cancer is smoking and other causes include occupational exposure to carcinogens such
as asbestos. The 5 year survival rate is 16%, largely because there is currently no screening
tool for primary care.
Anaxsys has developed a novel sensor that has been shown to detect asthma and COPD in
clinical studies. Early studies in COPD patients have shown that lung cancer and laryngeal
tumours can also be detected with this sensor, that measures breath profiles. Hence Anaxsys is
developing a safe, inexpensive point of care screening device that can be used by GPs to
regularly screen COPD patients and smokers at their specialist COPD clinics. This test will
provide GPs with sufficient information to distinguish those patients who should be referred
for diagnostic tests at secondary care respiratory unit. Early diagnosis of lung cancer will
allow surgical removal of tumours before they metastasise and spread.
The objective of this project is to establish through market research whether GPs see a need
for a lung cancer screening device that can help them identify those COPD patients and
smokers who should be referred for investigation at a secondary care respiratory diagnostic
clinic. The study seeks to understand the issues surrounding diagnosis of lung and respiratory
tract cancers and what is required to improve the current 5 year survival rates.
GPs with COPD clinics in their practices and their specialist nurses will be interviewed to
establish whether they see a need for a primary care screening tool.
Interviews will be held with patients and feedback obtained on the device.
Interviews will also be held with Pharmacy chains to establish whether there is a place for
such a device in these businesses.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
