These advances enable bandwidth-intensive and time-sensitive applications including 8K video streaming, immersive gaming, virtual/augmented reality, cloud computing, telemedicine, and industrial automation. However, these benefits can only be fully realised with a new class of front-end hardware particularly low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) capable of maintaining signal integrity, spectral agility, and low phase noise under increasingly demanding conditions.

To meet this challenge, TISG is developing a novel hybrid low-noise amplifier that intelligently integrates both traditional radio frequency (RF) amplification and free-space optical (FSO) signalling. This compact, dual-path design features a software-defined control algorithm that monitors real-time metrics such as signal-to-noise ratio, interference, and bandwidth congestion. Based on these conditions, it dynamically switches or blends between RF and FSO paths to maintain optimal throughput and low noise. This allows the system to deliver more stable, energy-efficient performance even in dense, interference-prone environments such as enterprise campuses, hospitals, and stadiums.

The prototype is designed to achieve a noise figure below 1.2 dB at 6 GHz, maintain gain linearity within ±0.5 dB during multi-user MIMO operation, and reduce phase noise by 20% compared to conventional RF-only LNAs. To address FSO limitations like line-of-sight dependency, the design incorporates fallback RF-only operation, beam-steering optics, and adaptive filtering. These features ensure consistent performance even under movement or partial signal obstruction.

The six-month development programme will progress through simulation, prototyping, validation on Wi-Fi?7 platforms, and early engagement with UK-based semiconductor and systems partners. The final goal is a TRL 5--6 prototype supported by initial IP filings and a path toward commercialisation. This project directly contributes to the UK's strategic ambitions in next-generation connectivity and semiconductor innovation, fostering sovereign IP development and high-skill job creation. It positions the UK at the forefront of 6G-ready wireless technology while strengthening national infrastructure and export potential.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
