For reducing Clinical Coding backlogs and improving efficiency for NHS Hospitals</ns2:title><ns2:status>Closed</ns2:status><ns2:grantCategory>Fast Start Response</ns2:grantCategory><ns2:leadFunder>Innovate UK</ns2:leadFunder><ns2:abstractText>Jigsaw Medical is a UK healthtech SME co-developing a Clinical Coding solution with three NHS Trusts. The Trusts have a growing backlog of clinical coding and urgently need innovative solutions.

Due to severe financial pressures, reducing agency/bank spend is a top priority for NHS Trusts. East Lancashire, Buckinghamshire Healthcare and Ashford & St Peters NHS Trusts are actively looking for innovative solutions to enhance coding capacity. We have a signed agreements with all three Trusts. These are not free pilots. These are commercial contracts, paid when Jigsaw delivers automated coding to the Trusts.

Significant inequality exists in the ability to recruit clinical coders throughout the UK. In London, Trusts like Chelsea & Westminster pay up to 30% retention and recruitment premiums + London weighting. In contrast, Trusts in Northern England pay only 5-10%. The resulting gaps in clinical coders rosters mean Northern hospitals pay ~50% more for backlogged cases to be coded using external companies. This additional cost reduces budgets for frontline services, widening the socio-economic divide. Jigsaw addresses health-inequalities by providing in-year cost saving through reduced spend on external coding services.

Jigsaw's solution automates assigning clinical codes to medical notes, with precision and in real-time. This reduces costly external coder spend (estimated ~£100k saving in year-1 for East Lancashire and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trusts).

Jigsaw specifically requests grant funding for co-development with East Lancashire, Buckinghamshire Healthcare and Ashford & St Peter's NHS Trusts. Through the Health Innovation Networks, Jigsaw will grow business activities throughout the UK. Areas with the highest potential for immediate cost savings will be identified and prioritised.

The economic 5-year impact includes £11m revenue (£1m years-1-5 cumulative international exports), and creation of 16 jobs, of which half will be outside of London. Overall, the project provides a 5X ROI (£2.5m year-5 profit/project-cost).

This grant will significantly accelerate the commercialisation and deployment of a game-changing innovation within the NHS. The project combines significant economic impact and ROI for the UK economy with excellent value for money.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
