Homes account for c.17% of all UK carbon emissions (DESNZ,2023) and use 35% of the UK's energy (TrustMark,2023). This huge challenge goes hand-in-hand with soaring energy prices: typical household energy bills increased by 54% in April 2022 and 27% in October 2022 (House\_of\_Commons,2022).

Retrofitting homes has been earmarked by the government as a key solution to resolving both these challenges. This is a mammoth undertaking: of the c.28m homes in the UK, nearly 2/5 were built before 1946 and \\\>50% before the 1965 Building Regulation established a requirement for thermal insulation. Up to a third of heat in a typical UK home is lost due to poor insulation, the worst rate in Europe (Greenpeace,2022). Retrofitting a home can involve installation of novel, greener technologies (e.g. replacing gas boilers with ground- or air-source heat-pumps) or improving on existing home parts (e.g. fitting triple-glazed windows enhancing air flow for passive cooling).

However, retrofitting can be extremely expensive, with the cost for an average property running at £69k (University\_of\_Nottingham,2023). This is out-of-reach for many homeowners, who have no easy way to identify the best route forward for their individual situation (e.g. home occupancy, budget, location, etc).

To answer the need for bespoke retrofitting and energy-management guidance based on individual situation, Heatio is developing the smart Home Energy Management System (HEMS) to offer homeowners bespoke, actionable energy usage and retrofitting guidance. HEMS uses discreet sensors and smart-meter data to track energy usage, supported by machine-learning and intelligent building modelling to help homeowners easily identify the best route forward for retrofitting their property, taking into account individual situation and budget.

This project will take our proof-of-concept sensor system, backed by E.ON and Perenna Bank and through real-world testing via Energy Systems Catapult Living Lab to market.

Project success will enable Heatio to prepare to go-to-market within 6 months. It will also deliver a timely and urgently needed innovation, offering homeowners an innovative tool backed by one of the UK's largest energy companies to support holistic retrofitting, helping decrease bills and decrease the huge contribution the residential sector currently makes to the UK's total emissions.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
