venues including pubs, bars, restaurants and stadia. We have carried out field trials with early
prototypes and the customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The COMPACT
project will transform these initial concepts into an innovative, small footprint system for
compacting glass bottles. The system will be modular enabling it to be configured in a number
of different ways to suit different situations in how bottles are fed into the machine and how
glass cullet is removed from the system.
The glass compaction unit will be used within a closed loop system to realise revenues at
multiple points throughout the value chain including the sale/rent of units, collection of waste
glass, reprocessing, Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs), sale of recycled glass & the
manufacture of high value added products.
The main objectives for the project are:
i) TECHNICAL – to develop a safe, modular glass compaction system capable of achieving a
10:1 compaction; with a footprint of 20bottles/minute (or 150kg/hr); colour sensing to separate clear & coloured glass
wastestreams.
ii) ENVIRONMENTAL - to reduce the volume of waste bottles, to reduce the number of
transport movements to collect waste glass, to improve utilisation waste collection (better
tonnage per vehicle) because of compacted glass rather than high volume bottles, separated
clear & coloured glass increases remelt & recycling rather than low value glass aggregate.
Clear glass sells for up to £70/tonne and green/brown for circa £30/tonne. Aggregate cullet is
valued at circa £10/tonne.
iii) COMMERCIAL – a small footprint will open up the potential market; a manufacturing
cost of</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
