With rising adoption of XR across industry verticals, digital twins, the industrial metaverse and the impending launch of Apple's Vision Pro headset, now is a critical time for the UK to establish a concrete pro-innovation regulatory approach to new human/computer interfaces including the metaverse, extended reality (XR), and spatial computing.

Existing regulatory efforts to address online harms, including the Online Safety Act, only goes so far in addressing the potential harms of digital technologies; as spatial experiences become more normalised, new challenges emerge that extend beyond the 2D screen experience.

This project would coordinate a network of expertise - including relevant organisations, researchers, regulators, and industry leaders, to design and capture a roadmap report for regulating human/computer interfaces and virtual environments.

The long term ambition heading toward the implementation phase would be to establish a concrete UK policy and pro-innovation regulatory approach to XR and Spatial Computing, an area for which there is a lack of centralised strategic framework for policymaking and regulation with governmental support, in comparison to other countries (e.g. China, Finland, South Korea).</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
