The project will investigate the use of bio-based composite materials, including bio-resins incorporating plastic and glass fibre waste otherwise destined for landfill, alongside natural fibre reinforcements, as a pathway to reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing its low- and zero-emission uncrewed vessels.

The study will assess the potential of these bio-based composites to deliver hull structures and sub-assemblies that combine the durability needed to withstand harsh offshore conditions with the circularity benefits of recyclable materials. Areas of focus include evaluating material performance and novel design features against demanding load cases, which vary across different types of sub-assembly. Additional factors such as resistance to prolonged UV exposure and moisture absorption will also be examined. Hybrid materials will be considered where fully bio-based solutions do not yet meet technical requirements.

As a UK innovator in maritime autonomy, HydroSurv has grown rapidly since 2019, with its technical development rooted in reducing the impact of ocean data collection. By generating evidence of feasibility and scalability, this project will advance UK leadership in sustainable marine manufacturing, contribute to national net zero ambitions, strengthen supply chain resilience, and unlock opportunities for wider industrial adoption beyond the uncrewed vessel sector.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
