I started my career as a Midwife having over 20 years' experience. I then became a Researcher, passionate about making recruitment to health professions fairer. I also have a close family member who is dyslexic. She experienced issues when interviewing for her first job despite being very personable and capable. However, the online interview assessment typically used by the majority of large retailers was a barrier due to the processing challenges she faces. She is not alone; 15-20% of the UK population is neurodivergent. Neurodivergent means having a brain that works differently from the average "neurotypical" person with conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. We also know there are thousands undiagnosed. This unfairness results in a significant unmet need in a rapidly growing online recruitment space.

Our market research has identified box-ticking exercises regarding inclusive hiring, for example, widgets added to websites to enhance readability, but which have unknown impact. Currently, there is no state-of-the-art online selection platform optimised to provide a level playing-field for neurodiverse individuals or the interview stage of recruitment. The resulting social injustice is a human rights issue. Moreover, negative economic consequences accrue due to the untapped human potential. Unlocking this would provide vital uplift in the current diminished labour market as well as enhanced productivity by up to 20% through diversity hiring.

In 2020 we were funded by Innovate UK to build an online interview and assessment system called SAMMI grounded in a unique and widely used scientific methodology, called 'Multiple Mini-Interviews' (MMIs). Originating in admissions to medicine, MMIs use between six and ten short independent assessments, typically in a timed circuit, to obtain an aggregate score of candidate's soft skills. They are proven to reduce bias and enhance fairness. SAMMI brings MMI online and automates and standardises much of the manual processes involved in their administration. We have multiple institutional customers and our data on \>1000 applicants shows SAMMI is consistently reliable and fair across age, gender, and ethnicity.

Now, this project will enable us to better understand key accessibility optimisations necessary for neurodiverse individuals and deliver a co-designed system fit for purpose. Our established connections with neurodiverse stakeholders allows us to explore what communication modalities, screen settings and personalisations will facilitate their performance. A new tested software will result as well as recommendations to inform policy regulating online recruitment technologies</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
