Departments for lacerations to limbs. The primary treatment goal in most of these cases is to
clean and close the wound and stem bleeding.
In 2010/11 the NHS spent approximately £1,500,000 on consumables to treat lacerations. The
basic treatment methods and equipment used (sutures, gauze and bandages) have not
significantly evolved since the 1900s.
The time consumed bandaging and re-bandaging of typical limb laceration within A&E is the
equivalent of having over 49 full time members of NHS staff dedicated to only this activity, a
labour cost for 2011/12 of approximately £1,206,000 to the NHS. Staffing pressures and
Government Targets around A&E treatment times makes the case for a solutions, which
enhance and speed patient treatment in A&E departments.
Haemocap Ltd. are seeking to develop and test solutions for a proof of concept low cost,
transparent, limb ‘wrap’ wound management system for use in Accident and Emergency
situations. The project will seek to develop a solution that will speed application, provide
additional functionality (controllable pressure on wound), and potentially reduce secondary
infection resulting from poor wound visibility.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
