biosensor device for measuring creatinine in the Interstitial Fluid rather then in blood and to
shape a development plan for advancing commercialization of this technology. The TSB
funding of this project will enable the technology to progress to the stage where private
funding can be raised.
Proposed biosensor is a simple, single use, rapid and minimally invasive (no pain and
bleeding) device which can be used by the patient at home or in a GP primary care setting.
This is a significant innovative step as currently detection and staging of Chronic Kidney
Disease (CKD) requires measurement of creatinine in blood. Blood sampling is a procedure
that is costly and of limited accessibility. In addition the procedure is associated with pain and
risk of infections.
Introducing our novel approach for creatinine detection can potentially open up very
significant market opportunities in early detection and monitoring of kidney disease. Early
detection increases the amount of time patients are exposed to therapeutic strategies of proven
benefit. It can prevent its progression and associated complications improving patient
outcomes and reducing the impact on health-care resources. Proposed device will give patients
control over their disease and drive better disease management and improved outcomes. For
providers this will consequently reduce costs and reduce environmental burden by potentially
reducing the need for dialysis.
It is estimated that 7.2% of people aged 30 years and older have some degree of CKD which
translates into more than 288m cases globally. Out of ~3.3m people that have Stage 3-5 CKD
in England only ~1.5m are known to the NHS. On average 30% of people with advanced
kidney disease are referred late to nephrology services, causing increased mortality and
morbidity. Late stages of CKD are associated with a very high cost for health care providers
