750674Novel SuspensionClosedVouchersInnovate UKERG Motor Vehicles has invented a road vehicle system that could reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%.The system is a novel vehicle suspension (Patent GB2460169) that eliminates torsional loads into the chassis, reduces road noise and improves the ride performance for small cars. These features combine to offer a step change in vehicle design for energy efficiency. The elimination of torsional loads to the chassis enables vehicle designers to significantly reduce the mass of the car body. A Massachusetts Inst. of Tech. report stated that "Vehicle weight reductions … could alone result in some 12–20% reduction in vehicle fuel consumption” by 2035. Additionally, the suspension offers improved ride quality in a smaller car which may aid the adoption of smaller vehicles into the mass market.
