10127188Smart Hydrogen Detection: SH2DClosedCollaborative R&DInnovate UKThis project, Smart Hydrogen Detection:SH2D, is a pre-commercialisation project run by the British startup, The First Element Group Ltd (known as "TFEG"). * Supported by a Fast Start: Innovation for Net Zero Grant TFEG has developed a TRL4 prototype of a self-generating Hydrogen Smart Tank, as a 'drop-in' replacement for LPG tanks. * It generates and stores green hydrogen at the point of demand via electrolysis using water and renewable electricity. * The uniquely IoT-enabled tank employs demand response algorithms to generate hydrogen when grid electricity derives from lowest-cost, lowest-carbon (renewable) sources. The smart controls enable convenient management of hydrogen inventory, cost, and safety features like automatic shut-off in case of leaks. * It aims to provide cheaper, cleaner energy (SDG-7), resilient infrastructure (SDG-9), and reduced emissions (SDG-13). **Hydrogen Safety and Monitoring** * Hydrogen is flammable, explosive, invisible, odourless, and burns with a colourless flame, safety monitoring across the hydrogen economy is therefore paramount * The global hydrogen metering and monitoring market is forecast to reach $6 billion by 2050.(Hydrogen Innovation Initiative April 24) * Low Cost, IOT connected Wireless Hydrogen Detection is an essential component of the TFEG Smart Tank Solution. TFEG has found that existing hydrogen detectors are expensive, designed for industrial and lab use, susceptible to interference, and power-hungry. We therefore set about developing our own solution. **TFEG's IoT Hydrogen Detector** * TFEG has identified a market opportunity for small, cost-effective, IoT-enabled hydrogen detectors suitable for consumers, commercial, and industrial users. * We have built an IoT hydrogen detector prototype (TRL 4) and identified a number of areas where pre-commercialisation support is required **SH2D Project Goals** * IOT Firmware and Software validation * Developing customer on-boarding and billing integration systems * Standards and Compliance: Gaining an understanding of the necessary certification and regulatory landscape and producing a regulatory compliance report * Developing a Sales Strategy and Marketing Plan by engaging with potential commercial partners and customers * Developing an IP roadmap and protecting any emerging IP * Investigating and gaining an understanding of liability and insurance around gas/smoke detection **Successful completion of the project will enable:** * TFEG to successfully launch/sell an innovative low cost hydrogen detector, which will also be used in core Smart Tank * Identification of new routes to market and a potential customer base * Generation of income to be reinvested into TFEG to accelerate development of other products and business growth:creating jobs, generating IP and further income * Unlocking next round of external investment (currently looking to raise £500k)
