Among the most common conditions is atrial fibrillation, which significantly increases the risk of stroke. While we now have implantable tools that reduce this risk, many of these devices are passive, once implanted, there's no ongoing way to track how well they're working or whether complications might be developing beneath the surface.

This project explores how we can change that. We're developing a new kind of implantable technology, one that doesn't just treat, but also senses and monitors the heart. It's built around the idea of bio-integration: designing tools that interact with the body and provide useful information without batteries, or wires. These next-generation systems are being developed to offer early insight into changes that may reduce risk, giving doctors more data, sooner, to help patients have a better quality of life.

The technology being explored here could be applied across a number of heart-related conditions, from rhythm problems to circulatory support. Our focus for this phase is to build and test the core sensing platform in a way that proves it's viable, safe, and scalable for wider use. If successful, it could lead to smarter implants that support better, more proactive care, helping to prevent patients becoming unwell and adding more strain on the NHS services.

At its heart, this project is about moving beyond passive medical implants and building tools that not only protect patients but also learn from them. We believe this kind of approach has the potential to reshape how we manage complex cardiac disease in the years ahead, and make the UK a leader in the implantable device fields.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
