However, there are significant obstacles to the uptake of electric vehicles. One of the most critical challenges is decreasing charging time to a level comparable to fossil-fuel refuelling – at least 160 km of charge in under 5 minutes. Such fast charging will require a power capacity of at least 300 kW, but the grid is limited to 50 kW and will be astronomically expensive to upgrade. We have developed an innovative flywheel energy storage system (FESS) that can boost the electric grid at local charging points to achieve ultra-fast charging at 300 kW. Compared with our competitors (other flywheel designs and lithium-ion batteries), it is significantly cheaper (50% cheaper than Li-ion), safer, more environmentally friendly, and faster. Now we are asking for EIC support to finalise the development, validate, and demonstrate our FESS on an industrial scale with our network of ten partners and customers.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
