This enables it to be diverted from landfill, and averts the subsequent escape of harmful greenhouse gases as it breaks down beneath the ground, which contribute to climate change and global warming. 

Both the waste and the liners can either be composted conventionally or can be processed together in anaerobic digestion (AD) to generate renewable gas and electricity, with a nutrient rich fertiliser produced as a valuable by-product.

But to gain support and the confidence of householders and businesses they need to be assured that by &amp;quot;doing the right thing&amp;quot; environmentally they aren't going to have to endure smells, flies and maggots in their collection containers.

This should remove perceived barriers and encourage greater participation, which in turn will increase local authority recycling rates and provide additional uncontaminated feedstock to fuel growth in the energy from waste industry.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
