Building on previous research supported by Innovate UK, the project combines marine biotechnology, fermentation science, and rigorous clinical validation to create a new generation of natural cosmetic ingredients derived from seaweed cultivated along the UK coast.

Fermentation enhances the bioactivity of seaweed extracts, increasing the availability of antioxidants, vitamins, and other beneficial compounds. The project will optimise the fermentation process using safe, food-grade microorganisms and evaluate the resulting extracts for improved skin health properties such as hydration, antioxidant activity, and skin barrier support.

The research will also explore UK's supply chain opportunities for seaweed cultivation, supporting our blue economy and creating pathways for environmentally responsible marine farming. Alongside the scientific work, the project will assess commercial applications within the UK skincare market, engaging with formulators, cosmetic brands, and sustainable beauty businesses to test and validate the ingredient.

By combining marine science, green chemistry, and local enterprise, this project aims to establish a scientifically validated, naturally derived ingredient that supports the UK's seaweed industry, reduces reliance on synthetic chemicals, and strengthens local business opportunities in the growing natural skincare sector.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
