In the UK, mainstream schools are failing to effectively and efficiently support the increasing numbers of children with special education needs and/or disabilities (SEND). There were 1.29M SEND students in England in 2023, and 22% of mainstream teachers reported being unable to meet the needs of these pupils. A failure to meet the learning needs of children with SEND has significant impacts on their school experience, life outcomes and potential for an integrated role in society. SEND pupils account for 46.7% of all permanent exclusions and 44.9% of fixed-period exclusions, and their absence rates fluctuate between 11.1-13.3%. Young people with learning disabilities are six times more likely to be excluded from school, and 50% will experience chronic loneliness. As adults, these students are seven times less likely to be in paid employment and die on average 15-20 years sooner than the general population. theTeacherCloud is addressing this issue by developing an app that improves the process for co-developing personalised learning/support plans for students to ensure needs are identified and met. This innovation will enable collaboration and knowledge sharing between mainstream school staff, external professionals and families in ways not currently achievable. It can deliver more effective support and provisions for SEND learners while also ensuring average time savings of at least 800 hours for schools with over 15% of learners with SEND. theTeacherCloud's advisory group of schools estimates the solution will reduce the time schools spend assembling and curating learner records for case studies by approximately 85%.
