Yet, decision-makers across the maritime sector currently lack access to accurate and accessible data to inform investment in low-emission technologies, particularly around the suitability of electric and hybrid vessels or associated shorepower infrastructure. This data gap is slowing adoption, undermining business cases, and limiting the effectiveness of policy and infrastructure planning.

BlueGrid will develop an innovative software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution designed to close this gap by providing clear, real-world insights into vessel energy demand and port infrastructure requirements. The project will develop and demonstrate a light-touch, scalable platform that collects, analyses, and visualises vessel duty cycle. This allows users, such as port authorities and fleet operators, to make informed, data-driven decisions about vessel electrification and infrastructure planning.

The platform will utilise duty cycle data to assess propulsion needs and suitability while also modelling shorepower loads for infrastructure design (chargers, grid connections, shorepower). This enables accurate forecasting of power requirements at ports, facilitating better grid connection planning and optimised investment in charging infrastructure. For vessel owners, the platform offers clarity on which vessels are best suited to electric or hybrid propulsion, reducing financial risk and supporting decarbonisation strategies.

Through this six-month Innovate UK-funded project, BlueGrid will deploy sensors on 20 vessels operating in the Great South West, with participation from the region's key ports and vessel operators. The team will co-develop the software with input from end-users and maritime stakeholders, ensuring the platform aligns with real-world needs and maximises benefits for the South West. This includes accelerating decarbonisation, improving air quality, high-skilled job creation and supply chain development.

Outputs will include a functional SaaS dashboard, an integrated API for seamless operator system compatibility, development of commercial partnerships with south west-based businesses and demonstration of the solution with local sites and operators.

The project also contributes to wider goals supported by the Maritime Decarbonisation Plan and blue economy priorities, including improved air quality, grid optimisation, the acceleration of green port infrastructure and facilitating electric/hybrid vessel uptake, providing economic, environmental and social benefits.

The project's user-centric design process will create the best possible outputs for BlueGrid and the region. Using data to lead the way in the UK and internationally as we expedite decarbonisation and strengthen the blue economy.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
