Biotecture have developed (patent pending) a practical air purifying system called the Biotecture Active Airflow Living Wall, which is applicable to the external environment and can be applied to trunk roads or motorways. The Biotecture Active Airflow Living Wall will benefit neighbourhoods adjoining the Strategic Road Network (“SRN”) by: • Reducing pollutants in the air (NOx and other gasses) and Particulate Matter (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) • Reducing noise pollution nearby the SRN • Delivering the above whilst enhancing the aesthetic of the SRN environment The system draws polluted air through vertically stacked planters. As polluted air meets the leaves and particularly the symbiotic organisms that exist in the rootzone, the gaseous pollutants and harmful particles from the air are removed. Cleaner air is then output from the system to create clean air zones. This modular solution can be deployed by the roadside on our highways, at scale, particularly in locations of concentrated / high pollution. Preliminary controlled testing of the system has shown that, of the air passing through the system, this method can reduce NOx levels by up to 99% and produce a 100% reduction in particulate matter (PM 1 &amp;amp; 2.5) concentrations. This 8 week Phase 1 project will investigate the feasibility of the technology, which is currently at technology readiness level 3, in a lab prior to a larger scale pilot project on particularly sensitive areas of Highways England network.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
