The prototype is named Eco-Highways and it has three major components: (i) Eco-Highways App, (ii) Eco-Highways API, and (iii) Eco-Highways City Monitor. Eco-Highways and the three component parts will be used to demonstrate the following: (1) Eco-Highways App: The Eco-Highways app is a travel planner that will demonstrate the visualisation of NO2 & CO emissions on highways in real-time. The app will provide highway users with emissions levels along a journey route. (2) Eco-Highways API: The API will demonstrate how streamed emissions data from Eco-Highways could be used to extend the service offering of existing Map services (e.g. Google Maps, Apple Map) to emissions visualisation. (3) Eco-Highways City Monitor: The Eco-Highways City Monitor will demonstrate how highway and local authorities could visualise actual NO2 and CO levels in real-time. Eco-Highways City Monitor will also showcase how highway and local authorities can use the platform to design and test tailored emission policies. Eco-Highways will benefit the UK population by mitigating the devastating consequences that Pollutant emissions (NO2 and CO) have on human health. Eco-Highways is coming at the right time on UK highways because pollutants emissions are increasing rapidly on UK highways causing several health scares especially in children and vulnerable adults. Eco-Highways will help to solve NO2 and CO emission that have been linked to Cancer, Stroke, Asthma, Heart diseases, dementia, etc. The Royal College of Physicians backed this concern up based on the estimated 40,000 deaths that are caused in the UK by NO2 alone yearly. EEA (2016) reveals that the UK has the highest annual death from NO2 after Italy all over Europe. Considering the high recorded deaths and the over £15.7 billion to be spent on 127 major road schemes in the next 5 years (UK Road-Investment-Strategy, RS1/RS2, 2016), the UK Government is now under huge pressure seek new and innovative ways to reduce on highways. Despite the rise in the awareness of the health risks of pollutant emissions, no tools provides NO2 and CO visualisation. Navigation Apps (such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, Tomtom, AA route planner) still lack emission visualisation functionality that can save several lives by influencing travel behaviours. Standing on a philosophical viewpoint that “To measure is to know. If you cannot measure it you cannot improve it.”, Eco-Highways will showcase Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Emission Visualisation in Real-Time on UK Highways. Eco-Highways uses Internet of Things (IoT) Instrumentation to capture accurate NO2 and CO emissions on highways. Eco-Highways is an innovative tool that will influence eco-friendly travel behaviour and emission reduction. The tool will also support local authorities to devise and test the impact of emission reduction policies.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
