However, access to the vital service of genetic counselling - the process that helps individuals understand and act on genetic information - is limited. The UK currently has too few trained genetic counsellors to meet growing demand, leading to long wait times and missed opportunities for early intervention. This is particularly true in areas like _Expanded Carrier Screening (ECS)_, which can identify couples at risk of passing on severe genetic conditions to their children.

This project will develop a user-friendly, interactive digital app that delivers personalised genetic counselling outside clinical settings. Focused initially on ECS, it will help users understand genetic risk and make informed decisions without needing to see a specialist.

Our innovation will potentially:

* Reach up to **4 million users annually** - equivalent to **3 million genetic counsellor hours**
* Could save the NHS **up to £1.88 billion per year**
* **Ease pressure** on an overstretched specialist workforce
* Help to propel the NHS towards a "**predict and prevent**" attitude rather than "diagnose and treat" as outlined in the **Lord Darzi Report.** The old adage "_an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure_" could not be more apt!</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
