While financial accounting principles ensure investors can measure/compare financial impacts across businesses and reward those that use capital most effectively, global guidelines that govern carbon accounting are unclear. This lack of consistent, credible data concerning emissions effectively limits climate action and market efficiency across the construction industry, which created 13M tonnes of CO2e in 2019\. This dramatically impacts efforts to reach net zero and creates a substantial need for industry-wide systems to monitor, reduce and consistently report emissions while increasing market efficiency.

NZN is collaborating with key players in the construction industry to develop a “Climate Conscious Contractor” certification mark, including a clear set of criteria for achieving certification, and a “small contractor emissions calculator” to enable consistent measurement of carbon emissions by small contractors across the construction value chain. The calculator will address an unmet need, enabling small contractors to measure carbon emissions on both an annual and project basis. Through the robust impact calculation and associated Certification Mark, key players in the Construction sector (Tier 1 contractors, Government & local authorities, homeowners, etc) can, reward low-carbon contractors and minimise their own Scope 3 and project-related emissions.

This is perfectly aligned with the recommendation in the Government's recent Net Zero Review (Gov.uk,2023) to create "forums for collaboration and cooperation across value chains to measure emissions" and will significantly aid the UK's efforts to reach net zero by 2050.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
