TMD affects 30–60% of adults and is the second most common chronic musculoskeletal condition worldwide after back pain. Bruxism — involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching — affects 1 in 3 people and is one of the biggest risk factors for myalgia TMD (M-TMD). Despite this prevalence, there are no licensed treatments. Common interventions such as splints and Botox merely palliate symptoms without addressing the underlying behaviour. M-TMD decreases quality of life by 32% and costs the NHS roughly £3.1B per year.

Committed to offering a game-changing solution, JawSense has developed an innovative biofeedback device: a smart wearable sensor that accurately detects jaw muscle activity using state-of-the-art sensors and machine learning algorithms, and delivers dynamic, personalised biofeedback to help users become aware of and reduce jaw tension. The design prioritises personalisation, user comfort, and ease of use.

This project optimises and finalises the design of JawSense's biofeedback device, complete with embedded algorithms and accompanying mobile app, and completes the regulatory documentation required to bring this innovation to market. The project delivers a market-ready device for the UK and EU, with a clear pathway to full medical device certification and US market entry. JawSense's solution promises to significantly enhance the lives of millions grappling with the debilitating effects of bruxism and TMD, while substantially reducing the financial burden on the NHS and UK economy.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
