Unfortunately, the UK has one of Europe's highest prevalence rates of childhood asthma - affecting 1 in 11 children and costing the NHS over £3 billion a year - a problem significantly exacerbated by poor conditions prevalent across much of the nation's social housing stock. Every child deserves a healthy start in life, but for too many living in social housing, the air inside their home can make them sick. Hidden risks like damp, mould, and poor ventilation can lead to serious respiratory conditions, including asthma, impacting a child's wellbeing and life chances. To tackle this challenge, nooku is launching a pioneering 10-month technology trial across Glasgow and London. In partnership with social housing providers and academic subject-matter experts, in architecture and health data science, we are working to shift the focus from cure to prevention. Our project will provide participating families with a simple-to-use smart sensor that monitors their home's indoor air quality in real-time. This device connects to an easy-to-use app, sending actionable alerts and health-focused tips to residents, empowering them to manage their environment. Simultaneously, the system provides anonymised data to social landlords, helping them to identify at-risk properties. This allows them to move beyond a reactive, complaint-driven model and proactively fix issues before they become serious health hazards - a requirement they urgently need to comply with given recent legislative changes. The goal of the proposed project is to create healthier homes and prevent childhood illness by connecting residents, landlords, and healthcare professionals through shared, actionable data. By incorporating clinical insights - such as those being trialled through the 'nooku health' platform - we aim to demonstrate a more collaborative and preventative approach to housing management. This will support the development of scalable solutions that ensure every home is a safe and healthy environment for children to thrive.
