Stroke causes severe physical disability such as attention deficiency, pain, weakness, and paralysis. Such impairments can result in a loss of ability to carry out typical day-to-day activities. This means that people are made dependent on others for daily activities and this creates a significant economic burden both directly and indirectly with 80% of the patients losing arm and hand movement skills. There are 1.3M stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 new cases each year and the number of stroke survivors living with disability will increase by a third by 2035 (Stroke Association website).

Virtual Reality has emerged as a new approach to treatment in stroke rehabilitation settings over the last ten years. VR systems help patients engage in intensive, repetitive and task-oriented practice to promote neuroplasticity and recovery. FES has been used for more than 7 decades to tackle spasticity-muscle overactivity that occurs when communication between the brain and spinal cord is interrupted. FES delivers a shock to affected muscle, activating nerves and making the muscle move. Both technologies have a proven track record in speeding and improving the recovery after stroke but currently only individual, facility-based solutions can be found on the market.

CardioCrown's disruptive technology will empower patients with the tool to enable self-management of stroke rehabilitation at home. We are developing NeuroVive, a stroke rehabilitation system based on several theories of neuroscience and motor learning which intends to add supplementary recovery procedures in addition to facility-based treatment and also after the patient completes them. NeuroVive consists of three core modules, a wearable hardware module, a software module, and a web platform. It embeds Artificial Intelligence (AI), Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and Virtual Reality (VR) into one system which can be used by the patient at home with the help of family or carer. NeuroVive will improve controlled voluntary arm and hand functions, track rehabilitation progress and provide constant feedback and psychological support.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
