Whilst they provide enormous communication & convenience benefits they have also become standard in the execution of every type of crime and illegal activity from low level crime to terrorism. The ability of a mobile phone to store enormous amounts of information means that they contain essential evidence and intelligence that can be used by legitimate authorities in their efforts to combat illegal activity. The ability to exploit the contents of a suspects phone to collect this information is now becoming common place and is an effective investigative tool. Up until recently the information contained on the phone has been relatively simple in the form of call records, text messages etc. However with the growing popularity of smart phones such as the Apple iPhone a new challenge has been presented to the authorities. These smart devices allow the user the ability to download Apps which enhance the capability of the phone. It is common for people to use these Apps instead of the standard abilities of the phone. A user may choose to use Skype for voice calls and Twitter for short messaging, but has a choice of hundreds or even thousands of different Apps to do the same job. There are now hundreds of thousands of different Apps available and there were over 1 billion Apps downloaded over Christmas 2011 alone. It is becoming impossible for any single organisation to be able to decode the contents of such an enormous number of different Apps and present them to the investigator in a useable way. With over 50% of phones sold in the west being smartphones there is now an urgent need to invent new technology and business models to be able to continue to empower investigators with the tools they need to fight crime.
