This innovation directly supports more sustainable food systems by enabling access to carbon credits and new income streams based on real environmental performance.

The project focuses on modular, closed-loop growing environments --- including vertical farms and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) units --- where carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) can be precisely measured using in-situ sensors. These sensors feed data into a predictive AI model that estimates current sequestration and forecasts future carbon capture potential, laying the groundwork for participation in voluntary carbon markets and the development of carbon futures instruments.

What makes this approach unique is its accessibility and fairness. Instead of relying on complex or inaccessible verification tools, Take Root Bio's system integrates real-time GHG sensing, mass balance modelling, and user-friendly AI analytics into a modular, low-power platform that can be deployed in urban buildings, community hubs, or regenerative farming sites. The project will provide a working prototype, a live emissions dashboard, and a demonstration of carbon credit forecasting linked directly to growing cycles.

The ultimate aim is to shift the ownership of climate benefits from financiers and intermediaries back to the growers themselves --- the people and communities responsible for carbon capture through food and biomass production. By giving them the tools to participate directly in the carbon economy, this project supports the UK's goals for net zero, inclusive innovation, and nature-based solutions.

This Catalyst-supported initiative builds on Take Root Bio's partnerships across Europe and Canada, including EIT Food and the University of Guelph's Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility.
