Solving this problem together with Royce and ASTUTE is crucial as results over 100,000 flexes would qualify textile-backed Treekind(R) for several markets including upholstery.

The global eco-friendly furniture market size was estimated at USD 43.26 billion in 2022 with a 8.6% CAGR from 2022-2030 (GrandviewResearch-2022). Furniture accounted for 18% of the global vegan leather market (GrandviewResearch-2019).

Petrochemical-free materials are appealing to millennials -- however these materials are rare (Vegconomist).

Treekind(R) is attractive to UK and international brands looking for alternatives to leather and non-biodegradable polyurethane/PVC. It is 100% biobased, made from green waste, and petrochemical-free.

Through our relationships with luxury, classic, and casual brands, we are testing Treekind(R) in manufacturing and capsule collections.

Increased flex is imperative to our success:

* Results over 100k cycles unlock the lucrative, expanding upholstery market
* Demonstrate high performative of sustainable/PU-free materials
* Resource/cost efficiency with less waste in manufacturing

22m furniture pieces are discarded annually in the UK -- the majority going to landfill (TheNorthLondonWasteAuthority). Annually, 300m pairs of shoes are discarded in the UK -- also mainly going to landfill (DoverDistrictCouncil). By entering these markets, our material would replace non-recycled materials that add to the UK's/world's waste problem.

Biophilica's awards include Manufacturing Futures, Drapers Award, Vogue Yoox Challenge, Microfiber Innovation Challenge, Women in Innovation. Biophilica is part of accelerators Fashion for Good and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership. By solving this problem, we will realise the potential from these platforms/partners.

In this project, Biophilica will create multiple samples. Royce will perform a number of tests. We will together analyse results, understand what drives failure in samples, after which Biophilica will create new samples with expected improved performance. ASTUTE will create a digital model of Treekind(R) which will be 'tested' through simulations. Royce, ASTUTE, and Biophilica all working synergistically together will lead to more efficient sample development and broad failure analysis.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
