It is close to impossible to flight prove new, innovative onboard software solutions. The lack of a modern runtime platform in space is proving a hinderance in expanding the reach of commercial payloads. Aligning the onboard software with the IT mainstream would allow development of onboard software using standard software development kits.
The proposed project will revolutionize the onboard software market in a similar way that the use of hardware COTS as satellite components has opened new opportunities and a new industry. It will develop a Java VM solution for deployment onboard a flight computer, including the protocols and APIs for remote monitoring and control using international space standards</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
