These networks give users the mobility and flexibility to receive services wherever they are. However, the over-crowded networks cause interference to each other that degrades the performance of the network, leading to slower download speed, disconnecting the users from the networks, and errors in transmitted data.
One method to avoid the interference is to allow the network to operate on less crowded frequency band by manually configuring the network before or after the deployment. However, the manual configuration needs special skills and sometimes is not applicable because of complex environment where interference signals are from other resources too. Therefore an intelligent interference-aware network is highly demanded where the network can reconfigure itself adaptive to the environmental change.
The objective of this project is to develop such an intelligent network. To enable the intelligence of the network, the first step is to sense the environmental signals to find out where the interference is from and which frequency bank the network can operate on. This project will develop an advanced spectrum sensing technology based on compressed sensing, which can sense the wideband signals by acquiring the samples at a less than Nyquist rate. This will reduce the data to be processed, and thus reduce the consumption of the energy. The second step is the reconfiguration of the network by software defined radio technology. When new data transmission method is required, new software could be downloaded from a dedicated server. The their step is to develop a distributed software downloading and management system to update the software when necessary. By these three technologies, the developed network will be sustainable and interference free. This is very useful in data sensitive applications, such as healthcare and military.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
