Patterns are the templates, from which parts of a garment are cut and assembled, and pattern-cutting is an iterative process of pattern amendments, fabric re-cuts and re-fits to attain the designer's vision. The standard fit model for patterns - a size 8 or 10, is scaled uniformly to different sizes, then vetted for errors before it is approved for mass production. A meticulous process, yet 30% of items sold are returned, with 93% due to fit. This is because there is no one standard body shape. There are at least 7 different body shapes per size and the human body proportions changes with weight increases. The average UK size is 16+ (58% of females). Designers have voiced that adapting clothing from a standard size to include plus-size is a huge undertaking. To compound this, fashion houses find it increasingly difficult to fill this highly technical role. As sustainability becomes more important to consumers, and as companies' bottom line suffer due to returns, pattern-cutters decline, the Body Positive movement grows, there exists the opportunity for new development in better fitting clothes. This is light-years ahead of today's CAD systems that are dependent on the pattern-cutter's expertise and would take months to pattern-cut and fit various body shapes.
