We propose an innovative, low-cost IoT-based ultrasonic condition monitoring system for railway infrastructure. Our solution uses guided ultrasonic waves at audible frequencies (1 kHz to 15 kHz) to detect significant rail defects and environmental issues over long distances, potentially up to 1 km between nodes. By leveraging commercially available off-the-shelf components such as single-board computers, neodymium magnets, and standard hi-fi audio equipment, we aim to create an affordable monitoring system that can be widely deployed.

The concept system comprises transmitter and receiver nodes installed along critical sections of the railway network. Transmitter nodes emit low-frequency ultrasonic pulses along the rails, which are then detected by receiver nodes placed hundreds of meters away. This potentially enables the detection of critical issues such as landslides, rail breaks, debris accumulation, flooding, and geotechnical movements. Operating at audible frequencies allows the waves to travel longer distances compared to traditional guided ultrasonic methods, while also enabling the use of cost-effective audio equipment.

Our approach focuses on detecting large-scale anomalies that significantly impact wave propagation, making it suitable for early warning systems in areas prone to environmental hazards. By integrating IoT connectivity through existing communication networks, the system facilitates real-time data transmission and synchronisation without the need for expensive infrastructure.

The project aims to validate the feasibility of this concept through a short-term study. The outcome will demonstrate the potential for a scalable, cost-effective solution to enhance the safety and resilience of the railway network. If successful, we plan to pursue further development involving additional partners and broader testing.

Our team consists of experienced engineers specialising in non-destructive testing and condition monitoring, with backgrounds in railway infrastructure and ultrasonic sensor development. We will develop a minimum viable proposition (MVP) for this project building on our cutting edge equipment designed for the fusion power industry. We believe this project aligns with Innovate UK's goals of fostering innovative solutions that deliver high value at low cost, ultimately contributing to safer and more reliable railway operations.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
