Symptoms can include pain, stiffness, limited movement, and disability, which affect the quality of life and independence (NHS). Globally, MSK conditions affect 1.71 billion individuals. MSK conditions are especially prevalent among certain demographic groups, such as females and some ethnic minorities, emphasising a need for targeted interventions. In England, 44% of Black people have chronic pain, compared with 34% of white people, 35% of Asian people, 34% of people of mixed ethnicity and 26% of other ethnicities (Versus Arthritis).

Physiotherapy is often prescribed to manage and treat MSK conditions. However, many physiotherapy patients struggle to adhere to their prescribed exercise regimens, with 70% failing to complete them. This costs the NHS 43% more per patient per year (PubMed) because of sub-optimal recovery, recurring injuries, and an increased burden on the NHS. Combining this with the recent decline in the number of practising physiotherapists (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy), a transition to home-based physiotherapy for straightforward cases is needed.

Existing solutions rely on generic tracking and blanket recommendations that rarely motivate. Motics overcomes these limitations through our digital therapeutics innovation for physiotherapy, 'Motics Physio', that delivers personalised care. Our innovation incorporates advanced joint tracking using the phone camera and an AI able to provide tailored recommendations and elicit behavioural change. If poor exercise form is detected, Motics Physio provides real-time instructions for form correction. If a patient struggles with motivation, conversational intervention is instantly initiated through a chatbot, which will engage in compassionate conversations, pinpointing strategies aligned with the patient's interests to reignite their drive.

This Innovate UK-funded project will rapidly advance Motic Physio's capability to address the major need for more personalised and engaging at-home physiotherapy. Over 12 months, we will refine our Motics Physio prototype to provide advanced real-time feedback and guidance for over 50 physiotherapy exercises, tailored exercise regimens and lifestyle recommendations based on patient behavioural data. We would also like to achieve a more intuitive and user-centred interface design for our platform, encouraging natural patient interactions that boost engagement with physiotherapy. By accelerating the development of these advanced capabilities, Motics strengthens its leadership in AI-driven home physiotherapy.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
