Worth £3.6 billion p/a and employing over 11,000 people, the sector exports 87% of the 28,000+ vehicles it produces each year, with the EU being a key market.

Due to its inherent low volume nature, the industry is highly sensitive to regulatory change and the associated R&D resources they consume for adherence. Therefore, new international legislations, such as the EU's (EC) 661/2009, dictating that vehicles must have various Advanced Driving-Assistance Systems (ADAS) as standard, alongside rising consumer expectations, is presenting a significant challenge technically and financially.

Ranging from Lane Departure and Active Controlled Braking, to more advanced autonomous self-drive controls, these systems are highly-complicated, requiring the processing of a large number of variables in a rapid time-frame. Without access to the required multidisciplinary capabilities (physics, sensor, computer programming etc) and financial resources of large manufacturers, ADAS adoption is currently prohibitive for low-volume vehicle manufacturers, who need an alternative approach to adopting ADAS technologies.

Validating the need, Aim Technologies has been approached by Ariel, Watt, Noble, and Morris Commercial to develop a low-cost (target £100k), universal ADAS platform. Therefore, building on our ICOMS Niche Vehicle Network project (NVN-FS20-1323) with Morris Commercial, Aim proposes a 12-month Sprint project that focuses on the development of a TRL6, vehicle and hardware-agnostic, ADAS platform for low-volume manufacturers. The project includes a technical feasibility assessment where the prototype will be integrated and tested with Ariel's and Watt EV's vehicles.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
