In addition to memory loss, PLWD often experience changes to their visual perception and other cognitive impairments which combine to make conventional books difficult to read. As verbal skills diminish, pictures also become increasingly important. Our books will be written, designed and illustrated specifically to address these challenges. Crucially, we will use text and images that stimulate the imagination and support creativity, rather than relying on nostalgic responses, as is often the default with dementia-friendly programming. Creativity and imagination is an area where PLWD can still gain a sense of achievement and pleasure as opposed to focussing on an area of deficit and decline. Bringing this approach and understanding into common practice is an asset of the creative industries and needs to be maximised at every opportunity. There are currently an estimated 820,000 PLWD in England and Wales with only 46% having a Care Plan and use of antipsychotic medication increasing to 10.2%. The number of PLWD in England & Wales is due to reach 1m by 2035 and post diagnosis support for families is inadequate with 68% of families saying they feel unsupported. It's not surprising that for many people a diagnosis of dementia can feel like a death sentence, as the most ordinary things that they may have taken for granted become increasingly inaccessible. At Equal Arts we believe in supporting PLWD to live life to the full for as long as possible, and we specialise in creative programmes that make a positive difference, enhancing quality of life and helping people to maintain positive relationship.

Our books will include narratives and visual content from heritage collections in museums and libraries across the UK, delivering the added benefit of expanding access to these unique resources and creating opportunities for dementia-friendly programming in cultural venues. A series of books will provoke interest and expectation, something to look forward to, enjoy and share. Online resources will also increase understanding and increase confidence to visit cultural venues maintaining a sense of place with-in society.

CGP funding will enable Equal Arts to address a gap in post diagnosis support, helping older people living with a dementia diagnosis and their families to maintain their well-being and reduce feelings of isolation, desperation and fear. Equal Arts can help offer feelings of belonging and security, an imaginative space of positive distractions and meaningful conversation.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
