its manufacture called KireNeriK. Stretching the fabric in different dimensions allows it to
change shape, pattern or colour. For example, the fabric can be changed from a matt finish
providing a non-reflective surface to a metallic finish, giving a reflective surface. Currently
KireNeriK has been developed for the fashion industry, using apparel appropriate materials,
however it also has potential for use in industries that require more technically engineered
fabrics. The colour change is induced by changes in the fabric structure during the stretching
process rather than being a function of the material type. By changing the material
specification the fabric could be given a diverse range of additional properties such as fire
resistant, antibacterial or slash resistant etc.
KireNeriK has a wide range of possible uses in a number of market sectors. To understand
which market sectors are easily entered, some characterisation of the phase change properties
of KireNeriK is needed as well as an assessment of current product requirements for different
market sectors. Market assessment will focus on industries where the unique properties of
KireNeriK would add technical and commercial value to the existing range of products.
A roadmap of developments will be constructed which will identify 1) markets which can be
entered immediately; 2) markets that can be entered in the near future; and 3) markets that
could be entered in the distant future. Similar technological developments will be nested
together to highlight areas where one aspect of development work would open up multiple
markets therefore allowing NC Intelligent Textiles Limited to focus their future R&D strategy
and maximise that chances of KireNeriK being successful in a new markets. Lastly, the
project will approach possible end users to examine their acceptance of the material within
their market sector.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
