We're addressing a UK's as well as a global issue that most of the food waste is not recycled but dumped into landfills causing huge environmental impacts and carbon emission. The major reason hindering food waste recycling is that the current food waste collection method is way too labor-intensive, inconvenient, non-hygienic, odorous and expensive. It also embarks high carbon emission.

Our solution, Vuala X1 is a bio-mechanical system, integrated with specialised micro-organisms and bacteria to automatically separate food waste from other wastes, turning them into slurry as raw material for biogas and hydrogen production within hours onsite. The slurry can be stored for months without smell and can be easily hauled away by suction truck to centralised facilities, like AD plants for energy production. This significantly delays collection frequency from few times per week to once per month, saving 95% labour and logistics cost while reducing 75% CO2 emission. The new way of food waste collection not only diverts all food waste from landfilling but also makes food waste collection neat and hygienic by eliminating stockpiling of messy food waste bins.

Although our solution has been proven viable and very user-friendly, it will inevitably involve change of current practice which most people may be reluctant. In order to let more people aware of the new solution and appreciate its merits, we propose to conduct pilot runs of Vuala X1 with different settings for some major targeted sectors like shopping centres, hotels and supermarkets. During the pilot runs, talks and visits will be organized so that people can see the actual operation of Vuala X1 and share the first-hand experience from the pilot users. In addition, the slurry produced during the pilot runs will be sent to AD plants as raw material for biogas generation. Through this project, it will be the most effective way to enable our society to adopt the new innovative technology, contributing to achieving our net zero.

Vuala's mission is to reduce 100 million tonnes of CO2 in 10 years.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
