Many vessels in this sector still rely on paper logbooks and manual checks, which are time-consuming, prone to error, and often fall short of current compliance standards.

Phase 1 of the project, funded by the IOS Voucher scheme in 2021, served as a successful pilot. Trialled across 30 vessels over 100 weeks, the pilot demonstrated strong demand for a digital-first solution tailored to small crews. Participants praised the system's usability and the improved visibility of daily tasks, but highlighted one critical limitation: the platform did not support offline use. As one operator noted during testing, _&amp;quot;The system worked well in port, but offshore we couldn't use it---without offline it's not viable for us.&amp;quot;_

To address this, Phase 2 will involve a complete rebuild of the application and its infrastructure. This includes implementing local data storage and a background sync engine, enabling crews to complete tasks without internet access and synchronise automatically when connectivity returns. The upgraded platform will also scale across multi-vessel fleets and integrate with existing vessel management systems.

For crews, BoatChecks simplifies daily checks, reduces duplication, and offers automated prompts. For managers, it provides real-time oversight of safety checks, maintenance, and emissions. For regulators and insurers, it delivers structured, verifiable data to support compliance audits and risk profiling. Based on time-tracking and pilot feedback, BoatChecks has been shown to reduce paperwork time by up to 50%, while significantly improving record accuracy.

The platform uses encrypted data storage (at rest and in transit) and is fully GDPR-compliant. Development will begin in late 2025, with offline functionality targeted for mid-2026 and wider rollout beginning in early 2027\. Adoption will be supported through in-app onboarding, offline training guides, and live implementation support.

BoatChecks will operate on a subscription model with tiered pricing accessible to small operators and scalable for larger fleets. Over time, anonymised, aggregated data will be shared with policy stakeholders via reporting dashboards and periodic summaries, supporting evidence-based improvements to safety regulations and environmental standards.

With partners including Williams Shipping, Fugro, Blue Funnel Cruises, and Associated British Ports, SAB Software is well-positioned to deliver measurable operational, regulatory, and commercial impact across the small vessel sector.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
