**AMBODY** is a UK-based innovation transforming the future of upper-limb prosthetics with a **modular, bio-enabled hand** that combines **affordability, dexterity, and emotional fit**.

Globally, **over 65 million people live with limb loss**, and **1.5 million amputations occur each year**. Yet **around 90% of amputees lack access** to functional prosthetics, and **up to 44% of upper-limb devices are abandoned** due to cost, complexity, discomfort, or stigma. The challenge is especially urgent in **low-resource and post-conflict regions**, where electricity is unreliable and conventional multi-motor bionic hands are impractical.

**AMBODY** redefines accessibility and performance. Unlike traditional devices, which force a choice between **fragile, expensive bionics** or **century-old body-powered hooks**, AMBODY merges the best of both worlds in a **lightweight, robust, and user-friendly design**.

Its **bio-enabled single-tendon mechanism** translates **residual muscle bio-signals (EMG)** into **four grip modes and 90° active wrist flexion**---a breakthrough that **eliminates multiple motors, tendons, and mode-switching**. The hand also offers a **manual fallback mode**, remaining functional **off-grid with simple, low-cost field repair**, making it ideal for **humanitarian and field use**.

To deliver **sustainability and social impact**, the system integrates:

* **Bio-signal interfaces** for improved comfort and control
* **Modular, repairable eco-system** that reduce abandonment and extend lifespan
* **Bio-based, recyclable housings** that cut environmental impact and enable local circular repair

**AMBODY adapts to the user, not the other way around.** Its modular, human-first approach restores **function, confidence, and dignity**, while supporting the UK's **Net Zero and Life Sciences Vision**.

By combining **engineering biology with intuitive human augmentation**, AMBODY opens prosthetic access to the **90% of amputees currently excluded**, creating a device that is **functional, sustainable, and socially transformative** in both **domestic healthcare and global humanitarian settings**.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
