Blood flow restoration is mandatory to save ischaemic tissues. However, reperfusion could compromise function/viability of range-of-organs such as heart, lung, kidney, gut, skeletal muscle and brain on their own or even cause l multi-system organ failure. Reperfusion injury is a multi-factorial process resulting in substantial life-threatening tissue destruction.

Despite of its high occurrence and related mortality/morbidity/healthcare-burden, there is no treatment available to minimise RI post thrombectomy. Body's own repair mechanisms are all that is relied-upon to recover from the ischemic state. Use of therapeutics have failed as the damaging effect of the blood outweighs benefits

Cerefuse Medical aims to bring about the next generation in medical device interventions for ischemic stroke. The mechanism of Reperfusion Injury isn't new to science but it is only now, with sufficient revascularisation rates achieved in stroke care that it is possible to bring this life changing therapy to patients.

Previous attempts to use therapeutics have failed to reduce reperfusion injury in the brain. A contributing factor for this is likely the presence of toxic ions and free radicals in the tissue from the reintroduction of whole blood to the post ischemic tissue. In simple terms the damaging effect of the blood outweighs the benefits of the therapeutic agent.

Cerefuse's disruptive approach aims to reduce tissue function without relying on pharmaceutical agents to have an effect on tissue (though they will be used to modify the salt profile of the blood).

Through this project, Cerefuse will

* Design/assemble functional prototype device that can successfully modify the blood parameters,
* Design and implement an initial animal study to show safety and efficacy in minimising RI occurrence.
* Develop _in-vitro_ models to evaluate blood parameters
* Prepare regulatory-approvals-strategy
* Solidify IP position</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
