Current inspection trains must operate at reduced speeds to detect cracks and fatigue in steel rails, causing disruption and high operating costs. QuanRail investigates the feasibility of a line-speed, non-contact inspection system capable of detecting early-stage cracks and stress while trains run at full operational speed.

Using advanced quantum sensing methods, the concept aims to move rail inspection from an intermittent, low-speed process to a continuous, real-time monitoring capability embedded within normal passenger or freight operations. This would significantly improve safety, reduce maintenance downtime, and enhance the efficiency of the rail network.

The study will develop a detailed use case and business case, assessing technical feasibility, economic benefits, and opportunities for integration with digital-rail infrastructure such as Network Rail's Intelligent Infrastructure platform.

The project is led by **Digital Transit Limited**, specialists in digital systems for intelligent transport. The consortium includes **Class One Ltd**, a UK leader in rail monitoring and measurement systems; Its Director, **Stirling Kimkeran**, was the founder of Omnicom Ltd, a recognised world expert in rail imaging and sensing innovation; the **Institute of Railway Research** at the University of Huddersfield; and the **University of Leeds**, providing transport economics and business-case analysis.

If successful, QuanRail will lay the groundwork for future demonstration and commercial deployment of quantum-enabled, line-speed inspection systems. The technology promises to improve safety, lower maintenance costs, reduce inspection-related carbon emissions, and reinforce the UK's leadership in both railway monitoring and the emerging field of quantum transport innovation.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
