rooms. Following excellent results from the proof of concept this project will translate the
concept of camera derived health monitoring of secure rooms into a prototype capable of
monitoring in real time and producing alerts when abnormal vital signs and events are
detected. This technology also has the capability to extend to a wide range of other residential
and domiciliary situations.
Secure mental health hospitals, prisons and police custody suites all detain large numbers of
people and these detainees are often significantly at risk whether it be from self-harm,
intoxication (drugs or alcohol) or complications from medication. The risks are currently
managed by periodic observations by staff, but these can be time consuming, inaccurate and
ultimately ineffective in avoiding major incidents which can result in death.
Working in collaboration with Broadmoor Hospital, the proof of concept project established
that cameras can successfully monitor the heart rate and breathing rate of detainees in secure
rooms. The trials were performed with non-patient volunteers performing activities such as
walking, reading watching TV and sleeping in both natural light and under infra-red
illumination at night and included elements of concealment.
Continuing the collaboration with Broadmoor, this 12 month project will be a major step
towards the production of a market ready solution. It will implement the algorithms produced
in the proof of concept on a real time camera and processing platform, provide secure data
communications to remote monitoring stations and present results in a format that is easy for
busy staff to interact with and action. The project will involve staff and patients and include
collaboration with camera manufacturers and installers. The key output will be a solution that
is cost effective to produce and can quickly and easily be implemented into secure
