Currently, real-time communication between hospital staff is achieved primarily through the use of pagers. This is slow, often unreliable and does not enable remote collaboration. Furthermore, the tracking of people and accurate delivery of key data is not possible and so clinical and operational decisions are frequently made without access to accurate and timely information. As well as from the novel use of social media, innovation in the CARES Project is based upon the creation of the unique:
a) ESNfH Gateway for distributed management of roles-based workforce information flow.
The gateway ensures reliable secure communications as well as undertaking real-time data
aggregation to trigger timely responses from clinical staff;
b) Data algorithms that combine a new set of semantic-based data representations of the roles and responsibilities of the appropriate hospital staff with notifications from monitoring
systems to ensure the timely delivery of the required information.
Successful delivery of these novel features will improve:
a) Patient outcomes as a result of faster diagnosis and time to treat, improved decision support for clinicians managing acute patients, fewer errors in treatment, more efficient use of clinicians’ time, safer handover of responsibility for patient care between clinicians, reduced length of patient stay with higher patient throughput and increase staff satisfaction;
b) The utilization of a hospital’s resources with accurate tracking of staff and the resources to enable reimbursement of costs and the management of scarce resources, addressing safety and performance metrics.
Prototype demonstrators will be produced and evaluated to confirm the approach and to
ensure that the required performance is achieved.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
