management assessment company and social incubator. To date, SHS’s management team has
delivered over 15 low carbon ventures and actively supports team members in identifying and
growing spin-out companies.
In partnership with Avalon Sustainable Energy Solutions (ASES) - SHS propose the UK’s
first solar PV installation on South-façade of high rise blocks using ropes access to avoid the
need for expensive and intrusive scaffolding access.
The UK has made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by
2050. Increased deployment of renewable energy “provides energy security, helps meet our
decarbonisation objectives and brings green growth to all parts of the UK” (DECC, UK
Renewable Energy Roadmap, Nov 2013).
Whilst a relatively high proportion of the UK’s high rise blocks have already been benefited
from various low cost energy efficiency measures - such as cavity wall insulation – the uptake
of renewable technologies across these blocks is still low, with various economic, cultural,
behavioural and industrial barriers. SHS believes that utilising the whole South façade via
rope access provides a cost-effective way to implement large scale domestic PV.
Solar PV Installation via Rope Access (SPIRA) applies the innovations of rope access for
cavity wall insulation to solar PV installation. These will be combined with innovative
surveying and planning friendly design approaches to provide cost–effective system solution.
Successful deployment of the SPIRA solution requires co-ordination amongst many different
stakeholders including, architects, PV manufacturers and installers, planners, councils, policy
makers, energy companies and residents. Before this can be achieved, the addressable market
requires: further segmentation, validation of the customer proposition; supply chain readiness
verification; and development of an infrastructure roadmap.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
