undertaken into the collection, collation and analysis of learning metrics e.g. user response
and interactions. These metrics will be derived from information gathered from a free,
learning ‘app’ targeted at Key Stages 2-4 education in Mathematics. The ‘app’ will present
touch-based, Mathematical, formative learning activities to learners. The corresponding
responses and actions of the learners to these activities are reported to a remote analytics
engine. This information is analysed to provide a wide range of metrics to characterize the
performance and capabilities of the learner in the context of the peer group on a local,
regional, national and international scale. The realisation of this capability requires research
into:
1) the analytics-oriented generic content model that will be used as the basis for determining
progress through the content (the model must be capable of reflecting any content created for
the subject matter);
2) the new algorithms that are required to map the touch-based actions into the corresponding
learning activities presented through the content;
3) the new algorithms used to analyse the learning activity data to identify the strengths and
weaknesses of the learner with respect to the learning objectives and expected outcomes (the
aim is to look for hidden correlations, to include historic data acquired from prior learning
activities, to determine pedagogic relevant measurements and to demonstrate learning
progress against learning standards).
The key deliverable will be a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) demonstration to show that it is possible
to:
1) create a touch-based learning content ‘app’ from which key state information can be
reported;
2) analyse the data and create appropriate metrics from which it is possible to describe the
capabilities of the learner; and
3) analyse the data to track learning progress against learning standards.</ns2:abstractText></ns2:project>
